I have observed that in video cameras, special detectors help to target automatically. Those sensors connected with some video cameras change in contrast, while others make use of a beam involving infra-red (IR) light, specially in low lumination. Higher specs cameras sometimes use a mixture of both techniques and will often have Face Priority AF where the digital camera can ‘See’ a face and focus only upon that.
